Summary

A female American spy in Nazi-occupied France finds purpose behind enemy lines in a novel of unparalleled danger, love, and daring by the Amazon Charts bestselling author of The Beantown Girls

Anna Cavanaugh is a restless young widow and brilliant French teacher at an all-girls school in Washington, DC。 Everything changes when she’s recruited into the Office of Strategic Services by family friend and legendary WWI hero Major General William Donovan。

Donovan has faith in her—and in all his “glorious amateurs” who are becoming Anna’s fast friends: Maggie, Anna’s down-to-earth mentor; Irene, who’s struggling to find support from her husband for her clandestine life; and Julia, a cheerful OSS liaison。 But the more Anna learns about the organization’s secret missions, the more she longs to be stationed abroad。 Then comes the opportunity: go undercover as a spy in the French Resistance to help steal critical intelligence that could ultimately turn the tide of the war。

Dispatched behind enemy lines and in constant danger, Anna is filled with adrenaline, passion, and fear。 She’s driven to make a difference—for her country and for herself。 Whatever the risk, she’s willing to take it to help liberate France from the shadows of occupation and to free herself from the shadows of her former life。

Kept me up at nightJane's characters were so real and there was plenty of action to keep me up at night。 Love that she didn't have much boring filler。 This was my first book that I've read by her, but she just zoomed to the top of favorite writers! Absolutely loved this spy story。 It kept me wanting to read。 Very suspenseful and a beautiful love story。 Even though it was fiction it was based on real people and places。

Terrific storyMost stories of spies and intrigue feature a male hero。 This tale of intrigue and spycraft from the female perspective was very refreshing。 I felt like I was mot just a reader but like I was an invisible observer inside the story。 Looking forward to reading more of this author。

Did not care for this book at all, but slogged on to the end。 While I have never read a harlequin romance, this is what I think they would be like。 Or a YA novel。 In end notes, the author owns the liberties taken with the timeline, throwing people together。 There's too much coincidence, name-dropping and having the main character conveniently bumping up against people who we all know served in OSS/CIA。 Also, the main character is a family friend of Bill Donovan, and of course, she works directly Did not care for this book at all, but slogged on to the end。 While I have never read a harlequin romance, this is what I think they would be like。 Or a YA novel。 In end notes, the author owns the liberties taken with the timeline, throwing people together。 There's too much coincidence, name-dropping and having the main character conveniently bumping up against people who we all know served in OSS/CIA。 Also, the main character is a family friend of Bill Donovan, and of course, she works directly for him and he continually turns up to check on her, and of course, she is sent to work under a French girl in the resistance who is an old friend。 Maybe it's your cup of tea; I'd rather have a strong coffee。From Amazon Prime First Reads, all I can say is I'm glad I didn't have to pay for this drivel。 。。。more

Fascinating Have you ever read historical fiction and wish you knew who the characters were based on before you read it and not at the end? This is what happened to me。 The book left me hungry to know more about these fascinating people and events。 I feel the author did an amazing job of pulling together several historically accurate stories to create a work of fiction that flows well。

Better than most Amazon First Reads。 While loaded with cliches and stereotypes, the story nonetheless had me reading at a pace that kept me from worrying too much about headscratchers such as (view spoiler)[why on earth Anna was allowed to keep spying when her cover was blown at Mrs。 Gould's party! (hide spoiler)] or the many coincidences that brought together the various characters at the most opportune times。 But overall, not a bad choice for the month。 Better than most Amazon First Reads。 While loaded with cliches and stereotypes, the story nonetheless had me reading at a pace that kept me from worrying too much about headscratchers such as (view spoiler)[why on earth Anna was allowed to keep spying when her cover was blown at Mrs。 Gould's party! So very worth your timeMs Healey adroit blends fact with fiction in this excellent novel based on the heroic deeds of the women and men of the French Resistance and Allied intelligence services。 She captures not only their bravery and courage, but also the terror and heartbreaking loss they all endured。 Very well written, and I highly recommend it adding it to your must-read list。

This story is well written, well researched based on true events with fiction tossed in。。。 I couldn’t put it down! It’s an easy quick read one I did in 6 hours flat。 The story will have you on the edge of your seat from the conclusion of chapter one until you turn the final page。 The true experiences of those who helped aid the resistance during the war are heroic & this book does a tasteful job of bringing it all together with the amazing storytelling of Jane。 Can’t recommend this book enough!

Bill Donavan, 1942, OSS, and a young, talented woman who becomes the 2nd American woman to go to France during German occupation makes for a great story。 The secrets she manages to steal boost the allied effort and help defeat Germany。 Good read。

Great WWII historical fiction I throughly enjoyed this book。 Women spies during WWII in occupied Paris, that in and of itself should be enough to catch a reader’s interest。 I love the author’s use of real people like Christian Dior and Julia Childs。

Julie Hastrup

Illuminating and entertaining。

My favorite Jane Healey yet!

Great readLoved this book。 I love WWII stories for many reasons but mostly because those who are perceived as the weakest prove to be the strongest and most cunning。

Healey's 2nd career paid off!A different perspective of occupied France。 I enjoyed the women's view of those who joined the resistance。 It was a bit sketchy a couple of times, but was rewarded by the end and reading about the author。。 Healey's 2nd career paid off!A different perspective of occupied France。 I enjoyed the women's view of those who joined the resistance。 It was a bit sketchy a couple of times, but was rewarded by the end and reading about the author。。 。。。more

Women spiesI loved this book。 From the beginning pages I couldn’t put it down。 What fascinating history。 There was so much I did not know about relative to the war。 The characters were so real to me。 Reading through Anna’s changes as her character developed was inspirational。

This was an interesting and exciting book about the women spies of the OSS and the French Resistance during WWII。 Although the book's characters are not real, they are based on true heroines of the time; and weaving throughout the story we run across General Donovan, who founded the OSS, and Julia Child, the French chef, who really was an operative during that time。This was a very enjoyable read, and I recommend it highly。 This was an interesting and exciting book about the women spies of the OSS and the French Resistance during WWII。 Although the book's characters are not real, they are based on true heroines of the time; and weaving throughout the story we run across General Donovan, who founded the OSS, and Julia Child, the French chef, who really was an operative during that time。This was a very enjoyable read, and I recommend it highly。 。。。more

I really struggled to finish this book。 For a historical-based romance, it felt super unrealistic。
